Hey there
Today I woke up with the exact similar confusion I was
feeling yesterday.
Am I going to pursue my degree in medicine or in psychology?
I've found both access of the study lines and trust me, I
can go either one of them easily. But which one is the best for me? It’s the
hardest question that affects a lifetime so far.
One of my best friends, Syark told me to take an initiative
to do the ‘plus-minus’ thing and I’ve done it all in my head. But if you would
like to understand and be as confused as I am, I’ll tell you the whole flow of
it.

Medicine |
Psychology | |
|
Starter |
South Australian Matriculation Program |
Foundation in Science |
|
Duration of study before degree |
1.5 years (July Intake) |
1.5 years (April Intake) |
|
The good thing about applying |
SAM is marked as 70% assessments and 30% from exams. Easy to score
and is counted as a fair system. |
Foundation in science only provides bioscience, psychology and
pharmacy. My grades on foundation in science is given full attention and
  support on psychology. |
|
Oversea Studies for my degree |
Involving this system means it connects completely with Australia. |
With selected requirements (which I am sure to score), an approval to
study either in their branches in UK or China. |
|
Requirements for my degree |
80% in Biology, Chemistry and Physics or Mathematics |
Once I take their foundation, it’ll automatically approve me for my
psychology degree under their base. |
|
The not-so-good-part |
As much as I’m good in biology and physics or maths, I suck in
  chemistry. |
If I enter, their foundation in science isn’t eligible for other
  courses besides psychology. |
|
Why I dare to take? |
Because the earliest program is by July. So I can spend these
remaining months on going to chemistry classes to score. |
Because the latest result is on APRIL!! Why bother going for
something hard when I can go for my studies linked to psychology early? |
|
Degree duration |
4 years |
3 years |
|
During my degree studies |
I can learn the human anatomy and be excited with all their tests and
  assignments |
I can finally speak out ideas or make critical thinking based on my
  perception. |
|
Will I stand out among my peers? |
No. Medicine only involves your brain to memorize every part and
function of the body. Many more can do better than me.
Oh really? |
Yes. Psychology encourages their students to be involved with social
interactions among the society. I’m good at that. |
|
Why did I choose this course? |
Dream job. Helping those who need the right medication. I enjoy
  making people feel better |
More likely to be successful due to natural talent on human
interactions. Likes the idea to make people feel better mentally. |
|
Career Job |
Doctor |
Psychologist (Not a counsellor) |
|
Where will I work? |
Hospitals of course. |
Variety. Hospitals, schools, universities, business investments and
  etc. |
|
Specialization |
Unsure. But will surely aim for being a specialist. |
Continue Masters in Clinical Psychology. |
|
Is it a demanding career? |
If specialist, yes. Still very much needed in Malaysia. |
Yes. In Malaysia we only have a hundred clinical psychologists, we
  need 400. |
|
The best part? |
My dream job is accomplished. I can treat people and etc. |
My highest potential is revealed. Plus, I have so much time with
  family and friends. |
|
The worst part? |
No holidays or leisure time with loved ones. Plus, not worth doing
too hard work when salaries aren’t much a pay. |
It’s a vast field. Jobs are unspecific. I hate to know I have no
specific job if I take psychology. I hate the feeling of not knowing what
I’ll be in the future. |
|
Biggest All Time Question and Doubt |
“Why be an ordinary hard-working doctor when I can make a miracle due
to my talents in communication?” |
“Why do something like this when you have been setting your mind all
this time for years to become a doctor, your dream job?” |
I am very much interested to work hard, sacrifice all my
teenage life to only spend with books or hospitals as long as the results in
the end is walking out of the operating room with a smile for the patient and
their families. Tired it is, but I know that doesn’t matter for a doctor, even
I understand that feeling now.
But well,…
You’re an expert. Can you pick which suites me best? Oh, you
don’t know my personality?
No bother. I’ve taken lots of personality tests and the only
career stated that fits my personality.
Guess what?
It stated I’m eligible to be a psychologist or a doctor.
Both suites me perfectly.
Now, tell me how to
keep myself sane?
